Eclipse 2017 Research - Past Weather - Satellite Images

I'm sure you know by now the importance of finding a cloud-free site to observe one of the biggest, if not the biggest, astronomical event in our lifetimes - the soon to take place - 2017 Total Eclipse of the Sun in the United States.

So, in order to provide some guidance with this quest, I have put together images showing where the cloud-free areas of the Untied States were exactly one year ago in 2016. Below are three weeks worth of satellite images - the ten dates before the eclipse, the date of the eclipse, and the ten dates after the eclipse. Each image has three snapshots in time for that date - one taken at 17:30 UTC, one taken at 18:00 UTC, and one taken at 18:30 UTC. These times correspond to the approximate beginning, middle, and end times of "totality" - the sun's light being totally blocked - bringing near total darkness during mid-day (see image immediately below).

By looking at the images, one can see that the area near the Nebraska/Wyoming state line was completely clear on almost all 21 dates. The areas around Oregon, Idaho, and western Wyoming looked to also be very good, and second only to the eastern Wyoming/western Nebraska area. However, look it over for yourselves and decide on an area that might be good for you.
